How to Add a Custom Item to the “New” Context Menu in Windows

The Context Menu is the one that you can get when you right click the desktop. This menu includes a New item, which helps you get various types of files. If you choose a type of file from “New” menu, you will be able to create a new shortcut on your desktop. This post mainly shows you how to add more file types to the “New” menu. Step 1: Open the Registry Editor by Pressing Windows+R keys together and enter “regedit” and hit Enter.


Step2: When you come into the registry, please navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT


Step 3: Select the file that you want to add to the New menu( for example, you can choose jpeg), and right-click on it. In the appearing menu, select New and click Key.

Step 4: input “ShellNew” as its name


Step 5: Click ShellNew, and right click on the pane of the right side and choose New>String Value

Step 6: name it as “NullFile” and close the Registry Editor


Step 7: Now go to the Desktop, and go to the New menu, you will find the file is listed on there.
